Maestri di Brera a Soho

Drawings exhibition by Federica Berner

Maestri di Brera a SohoThe "Maestri di Brera" has taken to Soho like an example of the art world of this quarter of New York which in the first decades of the 20th century was renamed Bohemia because it was "bohemian," a sort of Montmartre in the heart of a city still row, that would then become the capital of the world and also of art. Berner exhibits nearly 60 portraits of characters from the artistic-intellectual world of Brera from the later 1960s to the present. Some names: Fontana, Montale, Giacometti. The project is interesting also because it coinvolves some of the most significant commercial spaces in Soho as stores and showrooms creating an unusual artistic itinerary, where by art and handicraft they come together as one. And SoHo becomes even more like Brera, Brera transports to Soho. And a twining that doesn't know of official ceremonies, but of the mark of two cultures that are the same culture, the art lived as a refined instinct (you can’t get this if you are not an artist, sorry). It's interesting what Berner writes of Giacometti: "he would have liked his sculptures to have taken a more normal form, but that his fingers, unwillingly, had lengthened the figures until they assumed the hieratic aspect that in turn has rendered them so famous." Now the figure of Giacometti, thanks to Federica assuming a normal form, loses that hieratic aspect that became famous, by reflex, of his works. And in this realism of Soho the image of a genius returns to being the image of a man.
