ENZO MARI

Istituto Italiano di Cultura hosts a traveling exhibition by world famous designer Enzo Mari. It is a special collection of sixty objects carefully chosen by the artist in collaboration with some prestigious firms which manufactured them: Alessi, Artemide, Danese, Driade, Hida Sangyo, Kartell, Magis, Muji, Poltrona Frau, Robots, Zani & Zani, Zanotta.
One of the most thoughtful and intellectually provocative Italian designers of the late 20th century, Enzo Mari has always been preoccupied with the role of object design in everyday living and the function of the designer, whom he expects “to define his own model of an ideal world”. Every designer has, of course, the task of designing aesthetically satisfying products for mass production, yet each and every design also has to be useful, serve a purpose, and do justice to the materials used. Examples of his art and design are to be found in the collection of many Italian and foreign museums, including the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Kunstmuseum in Düsseldorf, not to mention the three Venice Biennale (1967, 1979, 1986) and Kassel exhibition (1968).
The exhibition catalogue features a preface by Hitoshi Abe, Chair of the Department of Architecture and Urban Design at the University of California at Los Angeles and by the renowned italian designer Massimo Vignelli.
